When someone gives you an answer that is different from what you expect…
Once upon a time, there was a teacher who was teaching math to a clever seven-year-old boy named Arnav. One day, she asked him, “If I give you one apple and one apple and one apple, how many apples will you have?”
Arnav quickly answered, “Four!” The teacher was surprised and a little disappointed because the correct answer was supposed to be three.
Thinking Arnav didn’t hear her properly, the teacher asked again. But Arnav, seeing her disappointment, guessed four again, hoping to make her happy.
Seeing that Arnav liked strawberries, the teacher tried a different question. She asked, “If I give you one strawberry and one strawberry and one strawberry, how many will you have?”
This time, Arnav guessed three with a hesitant smile, wanting to make his teacher happy. The teacher felt relieved that her new approach worked.
But then, she asked another question with apples, and Arnav confidently answered “Four” again. The teacher was confused and asked him how.
Arnav explained that he already had one apple in his bag, so adding three more would make it four.
The teacher learned an important lesson: sometimes, people might have a different perspective or knowledge that we don’t understand at first. It’s important to listen and try to understand, instead of assuming they’re wrong.
